Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit Preliminary Engineering

Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit Preliminary Engineering

Neighboring Concepts served AECOM as a subconsultant for the Durham-Orange Light Rail Transit Project preliminary engineering effort. They participated in the Triangle Transit Regional Transit Program Alternatives Analysis for the first rapid transit corridor studies (2010–2011), which included the alternatives for the Durham-Orange Corridor. Subsequently, from 2013-2016, they supported the Preliminary Engineering Design with 30% Design of the pedestrian bridges, the Alston Avenue parking structure, the Rail Operations and Maintenance Facility buildings, and the architectural design for the stations. Neighboring Concepts also provided some assistance with the public involvement process for the associated NEPA Process, including assistance with visualizations and public meeting facilitation.

The project will connect the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with the North Carolina Central University in East Durham, via Duke University and Downtown Durham, thus connecting together some of the most dynamic academic and medical research centers in North Carolina. The project will create opportunities to support these innovation centers with transit oriented development and existing greyfield re-investment along the way, shoring up the walkable patterns of growth that enhance livability and spur economic vitality while limiting regional impacts.
