The Ivory Baker Recreation Center is part of the final phase of a Hope VI development to transform the former public housing complex, Fairview Homes, into a viable residential community. The facility houses a childcare center, an outdoor play area, a computer lab, classrooms, multi-purpose space, a large multi-purpose gymnasium, support areas and administrative offices for a number of public sector providers. With a limited budget, Neighboring Concepts facilitated a very intensive and inclusive programming process that would comfortably fit the initial needs of more than 30,000 square feet into a 22,400 square foot facility. The façade of the facility was designed to harmonize with the character of the new residential development. The sloped roofs and building orientation ensure that the massing of the gymnasium does not overpower the single-family homes surrounding the community.
