Community

Nourish Up, formerly known as Loaves & Fishes and Friendship Trays, have merged to strengthen their capacity to tackle all the faces and phases of food insecurity in Charlotte. This is a merger of two strong, healthy and historic equals who saw this as an opportunity to have a greater impact in meeting the ever escalating hunger needs of individuals and families, now intensified by the global pandemic and its continuing impact on our economy.

Nourish Up Hunger Hub involved the renovation of an existing building to create modern office space that could serve multiple hunger-related non-profits. Our team recognized the importance of designing a space that could accommodates the needs of each organization while also promoting collaboration and information-sharing. In 2023, Nourish Up fed 137,806 neighbors, nearly 50% of the people served by Nourish Up are children and seniors and this organizations has been fighting hunger in our city since 1975.

The new Nourish Up headquarters/Hunger Hub includes multi-purpose space, volunteer-training areas, a commercial kitchen, refrigeration rooms, warehouse/flex space, offices, conference and training rooms, a grocery store for the individuals they serve and much more. We worked closely with the Nourish Up staff to understand the efficiencies of having multiple organizations under the same roof and designed a space that could support their unique missions.

Being the architect of record of the new Hunger Hub has been an honor for our firm and designing space to facilitate compassion in action, accommodate neighbors struggling with hunger, creating volunteer-friendly environments as well as room for education and much more speaks to our mission and hearts which is to transform communities through architecture.
